BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

Significant strides have been made in preventing fatalities on the road in Louisiana, according to a new report.

The Louisiana Highway Safety Commission said between 2007 and 2013, traffic deaths dropped by 29 percent.

There were nearly 1,000 deadly crashes in 2007, but only a little more than 700 in 2013.

Authorities attribute the progress to tougher impaired driving and seat belt laws, in addition to more law enforcement and public information campaigns.
