Two tax proposals will be on May special election ballot for residents in St. George Fire Dist.

Metro Council votes on revised tax for St. George fire district

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - Voters living in the St. George Fire District will get the chance to weigh in on two separate property taxes in a May special election. On Wednesday, the EBR Metro Council approved a request from Fire District officials to call the election.

The items on the ballot include a 1.25 millage renewal. The District's current 1.25 millage runs out at the end of the year. The second item is a 2 mill increase. Both taxes would be in effect for 10 years.

According to Fire Chief Jerry Tarleton, the tax increases will to fund several projects, including a new fire station as well as $3 million in water system improvements like adding fire hydrants to several neighborhoods.

This is the second time the District has attempted to call a May tax election. Council members rejected an earlier proposal of a 3.25 mill for 20 years.
