BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

Voters living in the St. George Fire District will get the chance to weigh in on two separate property taxes in a May special election. On Wednesday, the EBR Metro Council approved a request from Fire District officials to call the election.

The items on the ballot include a 1.25 millage renewal. The District's current 1.25 millage runs out at the end of the year. The second item is a 2 mill increase. Both taxes would be in effect for 10 years.

According to Fire Chief Jerry Tarleton, the tax increases will to fund several projects, including a new fire station as well as $3 million in water system improvements like adding fire hydrants to several neighborhoods.

This is the second time the District has attempted to call a May tax election. Council members rejected an earlier proposal of a 3.25 mill for 20 years.
