BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - Officials with the St. George Fire District have one last chance to get a May tax election approved.

The proposal goes before the East Baton Rouge Metro Council on Wednesday. If it is rejected, the fire district could face a $1 million funding gap down the road.

The current tax runs out at the end of the year. The St. George Board of Commissioners hoped to hold a May election to increase that tax for 20 years, but the council rejected that proposal a few weeks ago.
