Man accused of sex crimes captured 20 hours after his escape in handcuffs

GONZALES, LA (WAFB) - According to the Ascension Parish Sheriff's Office, a man accused of sex crimes in Georgia has been arrested. Officials with the APSO say Ricardo Rodriguez, 22, was arrested around 2:30 p.m. on Forest Braud Road in Gonzales, LA.

Rodriguez managed to get away from deputies during his arrest Monday afternoon. Authorities said that he was last seen on Airline Highway and LA 74 in Gonzales.

Sheriff Deputies, along with the assistance from the Gonzales Police Department, began a manhunt Monday night after Rodriguez ran into the woods near Airline Highway and LA 74. The search continued until his arrest, 20 hours later.

Dispatch used an alert system to alert residents who live in the area about the incident, and others received text messages.

Shortly before 2 p.m. dispatch received a call from a citizen saying a male was walking through the woods on Coontrap Road.

Deputies, already in the area, canvassed the vicinity and found him. When he spotted deputies he began to run in the other direction towards Forest Braud Road, but deputies surrounded him.

Rodriguez was arrested and charged with simple escape, theft, resisting an officer, and fugitive warrant from Gwinnett County Sheriff's Department in Lawrenceville, Georgia.

He was transported to the Ascension Parish Jail.
