BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - If you have ever worked in or near downtown Baton Rouge, you likely knew her. If you ever met her, you will likely never forget her. Christina Bannister, owner of Christina's Restaurant for more than 20 years, passed away Monday morning after a brief illness. She was 60 years old.
Christina usually ran the cash register at her iconic downtown business but was also frequently seen filling food orders during the busy lunch hour rush. Open for both breakfast and lunch, Christina's had numerous regular customers who Christina knew by name. Her restaurant is regularly a gathering place for politicians, lawyers, and business people.
During an interview with WAFB last year, Christina reflected on opening her restaurant nearly two decades before. "I had no prior knowledge about the restaurant business at all," she said. "I didn't know anything about it. Nothing. And it was the local guys that stood behind me and put their feet under the table and supported me."
Funeral arrangements were still being finalized late Monday afternoon. A family member said the restaurant will remain open.
