DONALDSONVILLE, LA (WAFB) - Officials with the Ascension Parish Sheriff's Office say they are investigating a double murder that happened on a stretch of road where a deputy and a 16-year-old were shot last week.
The shooting happened at 3:30 p.m., just an hour and a half before a Prayer Vigil for the youth of Donaldsonville was scheduled to be held, and near the intersection of St. Patrick Street and Latino Street.
Sources say both victims were rushed to the hospital for their injuries. One has been identified as 37-year-old Chad Nichols, and officials say he died from his injuries. When deputies arrived, Nichols was found dead in the front lawn of his home.
The second victim, 29-year-old Benny Booker of Prairieville was found lying in the roadway. He was taken to the hospital where he passed away a few hours later.
Chief Tony Bacala advised that the suspects stole Bookers vehicle, 2007 white Dodge Magnum bearing Louisiana license plate YPC 682 and fled the area. Surveillance video captured the Dodge traveling at a high rate of speed through Donaldsonville following another vehicle which is also believed to be involved in the homicide. The second vehicle appears to be a 2008-2011 white BMW 3 series vehicle.

A Donaldsonville man was arrested for attempted second-degree murder after a 16-year-old was shot in the face last Wednesday afternoon.
Sources say the 16-year-old is expected to make a full recovery.
The deputy shot in the hand last Tuesday is also expected to make full recovery. He was shot after pulling over a vehicle with three robbery suspects inside. They are accused of stealing ammunition from a WalMart just moments before the confrontation. There was a five hour manhunt for one of the suspects, but he was eventually caught. The other two suspects were arrested after crashing a stolen vehicle.
The three suspects are from Florida.
