BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - The first grocery store in downtown Baton Rouge in decades is officially open.
Matherne's supermarket on Third Street opened its doors for good Thursday morning. Fully stocked with fresh produce and deli, the grocery store also has a juice and sushi bar.
Councilwoman Tara Wicker represents the downtown district and said the opening is just one example of a booming downtown.
"It's Baton Rouge coming back; it's downtown Baton Rouge at its best," Wicker said. "It's what it used to be. We were having a conversation a few minutes ago and said the only thing we need now is a movie theatre. There used to be three theatres down here in the Baton Rouge area, so to have a full size grocery store here, it's an example of downtown Baton Rouge is alive."
The store is actually located in the same place as the bank floor of the old Capital One building downtown.
