BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - A flare up in violent crime over the weekend now has police patrolling the area in the 70805 zip code, and they're asking neighbors what they can do to help.
Baton Rouge Police Department's BRAVE initiative is taking on a new chapter by getting out in the most violent neighborhoods more often, and relying on the public's help to solve crimes that have happened in the area, and to keep the crime from happening.
This past weekend resulted in four murders within the 70805 zip code, so on Wednesday, the BRAVE team targeted an area on Plank Road.
BRAVE's goal this year is to get out to the heavy crime areas at least once a month.
The East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's Office Special Community Anti-Crime Team (SCAT), and the District Attorney's office were out with the BRAVE team on Wednesday also.
Every official had flyers in their hands with some of the basics that can help prevent crime, such as programs for children after school to keep them busy and off the streets.
The common request among residents in the area is more police presence.
BRAVE has been targeting the 70805 zip code since 2012, and there has been a 40 percent decrease in homicides since then.
In 2012, there were 77 homicides, 61 in 2013 and 59 in 2014.
Police Chief Carl Dabadie says BRAVE is working, but violence goes in waves, which is why his officers are out there, telling people about the after school programs for the children, and how they can anonymously help police by using Crime Stoppers.
