BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - Louisiana Gaming officials are not ruling out the possibility of a smoking ban hitting Baton Rouge bars and casinos.
A proposed ordinance to ban smoking in bars and casinos in New Orleans has had people wondering if that could be the case in Baton Rouge. Ronnie Jones with the Louisiana Gaming Control Board said yes. That's because the group that's pushing the ordinance in New Orleans has been successful in other states.
"I would not be surprised at all if they're successful in New Orleans," said Jones . "And I wouldn't be surprised if they also attempt to pass the same sort of ordinance in East Baton Rouge Parish which of course affects the River Boat casinos."
Jones said the proposal in New Orleans came about because of concerns over second-hand smoke. He said recent studies have shown if the ordinance passesOrleans Parish could see a 20 percent loss in casino revenues.
Shay Rousin loves to play the slots at the Belle of Baton Rouge casino, but doesn't like the smoke that comes with it. So she would be oka with a smoking ban in Baton Rouge.
“If you don't smoke, you have to sit there and deal with people who smoke," Rousin said.
New Orleans City Council will vote on this issue next week.
