BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - The Baton Rouge arts community is mourning the loss of an artist.
Friends of artist Taufeeq Muhammad said he died suddenly on Friday. He was 39 years old.
Muhammad worked with the Kress Gallery and his alma mater, Southern University, to bring art to the Capital City like a painting he unveiled in 2013 representing the students who held a sit-in to fight segregation during the Civil Rights Movement.
He was born in Decatur, Illinois, but raised in Dallas, which is where his development as an artist began at a young age.
His works have been exhibited in galleries, festivals and conventions in Dallas, Chicago, Atlanta, New York and Washington, DC.
Friends added plans are being made for a memorial service in Baton Rouge next week and Muhammad's funeral will be held in Dallas.
If you'd like to support his family in paying for the arrangements, a Go Fund account has been set up.
