Zoo announces tiger cubs to be called 'Kayu Merah' and 'Hadiah'

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - BREC's Baton Rouge Zoo has announced the final names for two female Malayan tiger cubs have been chosen.

Officials said they will be called "Kayu Merah," which means red stick in Malay, and "Hadiah," which means gift.

"When all was said and done, we had more than 1,100 officials votes cast on our website for the cubs names," said Phil Frost, the director of the zoo. "We're very appreciative for the public's help and are happy that we can now properly introduce the cubs to our guests and supporters."

The people who submitted the winning names will receive a complimentary gold level adoption of the cubs through the adopt an animal program and a household membership to the zoo.

The winners include Greta Massey, Elizabeth Murphey, Sarah Hulse, Rebecca Kelly, Kerry Cahill and Veronica Kimbrell.
