BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - If you're interested in a job saving lives, you only have a few days left to apply.

The Baton Rouge Fire department Academy begins this summer, but the deadline to register is Tuesday.

Officials hope to find about 20 new recruits to become Hazmat and Arson investigators and fire prevention inspectors.

The city's fire chief says working in the department is like working with a close-knit family.

“The majority of our people stay 30 years. They make a career out of it,” says Chief Ed Smith. “We have very few attrition through the years other than retirements and that's something that we try to make sure everyone understands. It's a career you can take and stay with us for 30 years.”

A recruitment day was held Saturday, Jan. 10 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at their headquarters on Harding Boulevard.
