PORT ALLEN, LA (WAFB) - Authorities said a known gang member led them on a high speed chase that ended with a crash into a police unit and the seizure of hundreds of dollars in counterfeit cash.
Louisiana State Police reported Mike Rodriguez, 31, of Martindale, Texas, and Brianna Martinez, 22, of Manor, Texas, were booked into the West Baton Rouge Parish Prison on Thursday.
Investigators said they later learned Rodriguez is a member of the "Tango Blast" gang out of Texas.
Troopers said the chase started when they tried to stop a 2001 Mercedes S430 on I-10 East near LA 415 in Port Allen just before 11 a.m. They said the driver, later identified as Rodriguez, sped off and exited I-10 at LA 1.
Tpr. Jared Sandifer said the car first headed southbound on LA 1, but crossed the median and made a U-turn on the shoulder before going northbound. He added the car tried to get back on the road and hit a trooper's unit, causing minor damage.
Sandifer went on to say Rodriguez and his passenger, Martinez, bailed out of the car and ran off but were quickly captured. He added troopers were given permission to search the car and found $940 in counterfeit $20 bills.
Rodriguez was booked on charges of flight from an officer, resisting an officer, reckless operation, improper lane usage, no driver's license and monetary instrument abuse. He was also taken into custody on several felony warrants out of Texas.
Martinez was charged with resisting an officer and monetary instrument abuse.
Bond information was not provided.
The West Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's Office and US Secret Service assisted Louisiana State Police in the investigation, which is ongoing.
