THIBODAUX, LA (WAFB) - A Thibodaux High School teacher was fired and criminally charged after she admitted she engaged in sexual contact with a 17-year-old student, according to Lafourche Parish Sheriff's Office.
Celeste Bergeron, 25, was charged Wednesday morning and is no longer employed by the Lafourche Parish School District.
Detectives began their investigation on Monday after learning of alleged sexual contact between Bergeron and a student. At that time, Bergeron was placed on leave pending the out come of the investigation.
Detectives learned Bergeron and a student had engaged in sexual activity on at least two occasions, and they had exchanged numerous private messages over social media. In meeting with detectives Wednesday morning, Bergeron admitted to having sexual contact with the student.
Bergeron was issued a criminal summons for prohibited sexual conduct between an educator and a student. Penalties for a first offense of this crime include a fine of not more than $1,000 or imprisonment for not more than six months, or both.
Lafourche Parish Schools Superintendent Jo Ann Matthews said Bergeron is no longer employed by the Lafourche Parish School District.
"This type of behavior will not be tolerated by any personnel in Lafourche Parish Schools and will be dealt with swiftly," said Matthews.
School officials say Bergeron is a first year teacher and passed all background checks.
