Hundreds attend wake for police officer killed in crash

DENHAM SPRINGS, LA (WAFB) - An entire community is grieving the death of a police officer who was killed in a terrible accident.

Hundreds gathered to begin saying their final goodbyes to Officer James Foster of the Denham Springs Police Department and more than one word was needed to describe the atmosphere inside Abundant Life Church for his wake Friday night.

According to one woman, there are too many words to describe Foster.

"I don't know if there is enough words," said Terri Witts with Brotherhood of Valour. "He was just that guy."

Foster hit a car that turned in front of him on December 29 while he was on his police motorcycle responding to a crash on I-12. Those in attendance Friday night shed tears and shared hugs as they honored his memory.

Foster was also a member of Brotherhood of Valour, a motorcycle club. According to Witts, said the best memories of Foster are the stories he used to tell when they went out for a ride.

"He had multiple languages that he spoke. He was telling us about how he would be on a traffic stop and someone would try to speak a different language to him in trying to fool him and he would speak their language," Witts explained.

Det. Glenn Lemoine with DSPD said Foster's loss is hard to swallow for the department.

"It's just so surreal," Lemoine said. "It's just so hard. I don't think a lot of the officers have truly accepted the fact Officer Foster is no longer with us."

"Somebody just used the word in past tense about him riding with our club and I corrected them because James will always be in our heart when we ride. He will always be with us," Witts added.

Visitation will continue at Abundant Life Church on Saturday at 9 a.m. The funeral service will begin at 11 a.m.

Abundant Life Church is located at 206 Edgewood Drive, just off LA 16 next to Walmart.

Interment immediately following service at Denham Springs Memorial Cemetery on North Range Avenue in Denham Springs.

A blood drive is being held at OLOL on Essen Lane in Foster's name. A memorial fund has also been set up in his name at any Capital One bank location.

Foster is the first Denham Springs officer killed in the line of duty.
