BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - Baton Rouge's first baby of 2015 made her arrival at Woman's Hospital about 20 minutes into the new year, but in some places the first New Year's Day baby is being kept a secret.
Evelynn is the first baby born in Baton Rouge in 2015. Woman's Hospital officials said she was born at 12:21 a.m. and weighed 7 pounds, 10 ounces.
Her mother, Ashley, said Evelynn was due December 28, so she and husband, Devin, were expecting their first child to arrive sometime around Christmas.
According to Ashley, friends kept saying they might have a New Year's baby.
"We were like, 'What's that?'" she said. "There's such a thing?"
Some hospitals around the country have stopped announcing when a baby is born on January 1. Some said the new policy is due to identity theft or even abduction. Hospitals around the Baton Rouge area have taken certain precautions as well, but if the family of the newborn agrees, minimal access is granted.
Devin said one day when his daughter is older, he's looking forward to telling her how much attention she got on her birthday.
As for their hopes and dreams for 2015, both parents are in the process of finishing medical school.
"She's 12, 14 hours old, so we haven't gotten that far. Maybe a couple naps," Ashley said about Evelynn's future.
So, for now, they are just trying to get through the first day as a family of three.
