BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - Charges have been upgraded against a woman accused in the death of her 2-year-old daughter.
The Baton Rouge Police Department reported Candice Smith, 21, was charged with first-degree murder Wednesday after the coroner ruled the death of Da'Laijah Smith as a homicide.
The autopsy showed the child suffered blunt force injuries of the stomach, throat, head and neck with recent and remote rib fractures. Dr. William "Beau" Clark also noted there were abrasions and bruises on the victim's arms and legs.
Investigators said EMS was called to a home on Beachwood Drive on Monday around 9:15 p.m., where they found an unresponsive child. The child was rushed to the hospital where she later died as a result of traumatic injuries.
When questioned by police, Candice Smith allegedly admitted to pushing the child, causing her to fall and hit her head against a shower wall.
Bond has not been set.
