THIBODAUX, LA (WAFB) -

The Thibodaux Police Department will join law enforcement agencies from across the world for a Global Police Tweet-A-Thon on Friday, Dec. 19, 2014. Didn't know there was a global tweet-a-thon for law enforcement? You're not the only one.

Around 8 a.m. Friday, law enforcement agencies around the world will connect via Twitter to participate in the 24-hour-long event. The event was designed to bring attention to the latest trend of law enforcement in social media.

All participating agencies will tweet using the same hashtag, #poltwt; taking followers on a virtual police ride-a-long. In addition, Chief Silverii will be participating in a video broadcast titled "HangOut" as part of the Global Police Tweet-A-Thon.

#Poltwt is a twice a year event that lasts for 24 hours in each timezone. #PolTwt is the creation of LAwS Communications. The first PolTwt happened in March of 2013 connecting cops around the world and building relationships between police and the citizens they serve.

The Thibodaux Police Twitter page has more than 1,200 followers. You can find them @ThibodauxPD.

"This remains our commitment to transparent and accountable public service," said Chief Silverii. "What a great way to share on a global scale, the community-based operations of your city's Police Department."

The public is invited to join the conversation on Twitter. During the even, you will be able to have a 24-hour virtual tour of a life in uniform.

Crime data and proactive police activities affecting quality of life issues are made available to the public through our web-based data mapping application.

"Our goal is the reduction of social harm." says Chief of Police Scott Silverii. "Providing reliable, timely information to our citizens is a priority," he said.

Thibodaux Police's web based services allow citizens to sign up for free email alerts, and anonymous crime-solving tips. "Crime and officer-activity mapping, along with the implementation of the Data-Driven Approaches to Crime and Traffic Safety (DDACTS) ensures that the city's police department maximizes the utilization of public resources in an efficient and effective manner." Silverii added.

Thibodaux is a city in and the parish seat of Lafourche Parish, Louisiana, along the banks of Bayou Lafourche. The population was 14,431 at the 2000 census.
