BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - Greg Albrecht, chief economist with the Legislative Fiscal Office, spoke at the Press Club on Monday.
"We have relatively low income taxation, but we have an income tax," Albrecht said. "We have high sales tax, but then we have low property tax. We have this mix."
He said Louisiana needs to look at the long list of tax breaks that he claimed are really spending programs, which siphon money from the budget, just as building a road would.
He said the $7 billion in tax credits and rebates the state offers are open-ended with few controls or review. According to Albrecht, the money just goes out the door.
This was the last meeting of the year for the Baton Rouge Press Club. Monday lunch meetings will resume on Jan. 5, 2015.
