ANGOLA, LA (WAFB) - The stockings are up in one of Santa's workshops tucked deep inside the maximum security gates of Angola Penitentiary. The "elves" are hurrying to complete this year's haul of toys.
Inmates volunteer to work here in the Angola Toy Shop. They refurbish bikes, and hand-craft wooden toys- working on everything from little ducks that roll to fire trucks and cars.
"It's one thing for the kids, but also to help the family," said one inmate worker.
Each year the inmates of the Angola toy shop out do themselves and donate the toys to West Feliciana Sheriff Austin Daniel's annual Christmas party for kids. The wooden duck toy is always a big hit and one inmate laughed as he works one, "We got a lot of time on our hands in here and we got time to do the ducks!"
Another inmate added, "We've gotten letters from people who say if it wasn't for us their child wouldn't have a Christmas at all and that really touches you to the heart."
