BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - A report released Thursday shows Louisiana public high school students are missing out on $54 million worth of opportunities to pay for college and technical training.
The report says only 44 percent of Louisiana seniors are completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). FAFSA is the form you need for financial aid, grants and work study programs.
State Superintendent of Education John White says he hopes more families will be encouraged to fill out the form to help make post-secondary education affordable.
"Every American and every Louisianian deserves an opportunity to gain the skills to go to college. Be it community college or a four year university, and the fact that we have such a stark divide among race and class lines should call us to raise our expectations for all students," said White.
