PORT ALLEN, LA (WAFB) - Crews demolished Port Allen's old City Hall Tuesday morning. The building on Jefferson Avenue had been vacant for seven years.
City officials considered renovating the building, but an architect's inspection showed that it had numerous structural issues, black mold and areas containing asbestos, which could pose a health hazard.
With those findings, renovation became cost prohibitive. The city moved into its new administrative building on Court Street near the Mississippi River levee in 2007.
Demolition cost is approximately $40,000. City officials do not have plans for the property at this time.
