BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - The race for U.S. Senator has been called by the Associated Press and Republican Representative Bill Cassidy beat out Senator Mary Landrieu who has been in office for three terms.
Cassidy's win will push the GOP's new Senate majority to 54 seats in January and cost Democrats their last Senate seat in the Deep South.
After Republicans locked down control of the Senate during the November elections, Louisiana lost some of its urgency for national Democrats. The National Democratic Senatorial Committee withdrew its investment early on in the runoff and left Landrieu to fend for herself, as did most of the major Democratic spending groups.
