HOUSTON, TX (WAFB/AP) - The Southern University Jaguars failed to win their second SWAC championship in a row, falling to the Alcorn State Braves 38-24 in Houston.
Quarterback Austin Howard was 15 of 30 for 152 yards and running back Lenard Tillery had 115 yards from scrimmage for Southern (9-4). However, Tillery had a costly fumble that went in the end zone in the fourth quarter and Alcorn State (10-3) recovered it, as the Jaguars were trying to mount a comeback.
Alcorn State quarterback John Gibbs, Jr. was 20 of 30 for 245 yards and three touchdowns on Saturday to lead the Braves to first conference championship since 1994 when they were co-champions with Grambling State and first outright since 1992. He added 132 yards rushing.
Running back Arron Baker had 12 carries for 58 yards, while running back Anthony Williams III rushed for 26 yards and two touchdowns - a 12-yard run in the second quarter and a 4-yard score with 4:55 left in the third that put Alcorn State ahead for good.
Gibbs found Brandon Vessell for a 51-yard touchdown pass to extend Alcorn's lead to 38-24 early in the fourth.
