Police identify man killed in Gonzales head-on crash

GONZALES, LA (WAFB) - Authorities released the name of the man killed in a head-on collision in a construction zone late Tuesday night.

Louisiana State Police reported the victim is Kirt Canova, 42, of Donaldsonville.

Troopers said the crash happened on LA 30 near St. Landry Avenue in Gonzales around 11:30 p.m.

According to witnesses, Canova ignored a flag man in the construction zone and drove past him. They said Canova's vehicle then slammed head-on into a dump truck that was parked in the construction zone.

Investigators said the dump truck driver was not injured. They added the highway was closed for about two hours while crews cleared the wreckage from the area.

Officials issued a reminder to drivers about the importance of using caution in construction zones. They said drivers should slow down when approaching work zones and follow posted speed limits, warning signs and directions from flag men.
