Tangipahoa Sheriff's office receives grant to help fight DWI, underage drinking

HAMMOND, LA (WAFB) - The Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff's Office has received grant funding from the Highway Safety Commission to conduct additional traffic safety enforcement activities throughout the year.

The yearlong grant, which began in October, will allow the Sheriff's office to continue conducting DWI checkpoints and seatbelt patrols. Funding has also been provided for programs targeting underage drinking and the illegal sale of alcohol to minors. This grant funding will also be used to increase the number of deputies on the streets.

The department is also participating in ‘Click it or Ticket' campaign to crack down on drivers who do not use their seatbelt. The campaign starts Monday.

The goal, says Sheriff Daniel Edwards, is to “help make the roads the safest they can be by eliminating distractions, driving sober, and by properly using seatbelt restraints.”
