BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - Authorities are asking the public to take every precaution when they are out shopping this holiday season.
According to statistics from the FBI, Baton Rouge has a higher robbery rate than New Orleans per capita. New Orleans is almost double in population. Some may find this as a shock, but LSU sociology chair Edward Shihadeh said you have to look at the numbers at a different angle.
"What's going on with robbery and burglary is people in New Orleans are reluctant to report this to the police," said Shihadeh. "It is not that our city is more violent. It's that people in Baton Rouge are more confidant and more willing to report robbery and burglary to the police."
Baton Rouge Police Lt. Jonny Dunnam said people can take several precautions to make sure they are not a victim of a crime this holiday season.
"Anybody that goes shopping during the holiday season should shop in the day light hours," said Dunnam. "If they are going to shop at night they should bring somebody with them."
Most importantly he said be aware of your surroundings while shopping.
