Sorrento officials vote to stop paying police chief

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - Fern Barnett may still be the police chief of Sorrento, but the Town Council voted Tuesday to stop paying her.

Because voters approved shutting down the Sorrento Police Department in favor of using the Ascension Sheriff's office, there was no job for the chief. She was not at the meeting.

"Paying her is a waste of money," Mayor Mike Lambert said. "We have the finest Sheriff's department probably in the state of Louisiana."

Ascension Sheriff Jeff Wiley was there to describe in detail what Sorrento's contract for law enforcement entails. The department provides similar coverage to other small towns.
