Louisiana returns largest amount of money in a year since unclaimed property program started

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

The Louisiana state treasurer said $35.5 million has been returned to thousands of people in Louisiana this year.

Treasurer John Kennedy gave out that figure while talking about the success of Louisiana's unclaimed property program in the 2013-2014 fiscal year.

The amount is reportedly the most money given back in a single year since the program was created more than 40 years ago.

Unclaimed property includes old savings and checking accounts, payroll checks and CDs.
