Football coach killed in early morning shooting

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - Baton Rouge Police say a man has died after he was shot early Sunday morning.

The shooting took place in a parking lot at 4700 Bennington Avenue around 2:00 a.m.

Investigators say Juan Joseph, 27, was shot after he had a brief argument with an unknown male suspect. Joseph was taken to a local hospital and later died from his injuries.

Juan was a coach at West St. John High School. Juan's brother, Dray Joseph, was the MVP quarterback for last year's SWAC championship winning Southern University Jaguars.

West St. John High, the team Juan helped coach, will be playing in their first playoff game on Friday. Juan was a father to a daughter with another child on the way.

A statement from the St. John the Baptist Public School District says that Joseph wasn't "just an employee of this school system, but an important part of the community."

Grief counselors are scheduled to be at West St. John High School on Monday to help students and staff deal with this loss.

Anyone with information regarding this shooting is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 344-STOP.
