Sorrento abolishes police department

SORRENTO, LA (WAFB) -

The town of Sorrento has abolished its police department. In the Tuesday night elections, 66 percent of the votes cast were to abolish the department.

Ex-Sorrento Chief Earl Theriot quit amid a sexual assault investigation. A string of legal troubles and alleged scandals left the department uninsured and without funding.

Sorrento's Police Department and the Mayor's Office were separated by just one door, but they were miles apart on the issue. Some thought the town was better off under the protection of the Ascension Parish Sheriff's Office, which had been handling the town's policing needs.
