9 dogs, numerous cats rescued from house fire

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

Baton Rouge Firefighters rescued nine dogs and an unknown number of cats from a house fire in Baton Rouge just after 1 p.m. Unfortunately, two other dogs did not survive the fire. The homeowners were not home at the time of the fire.

It took firefighters about 30 minutes to gain control of the fire in the 12000 block of Sherbrook Ave. When they arrived, they found smoke coming from the side of the house and venting through the roof. The fire was in the kitchen area.

When firefighters were extinguishing the fire, they noticed pets running around inside. Approximately 11 dogs and an unknown number of cats were inside. Firefighters started giving some of the dogs oxygen.

The cause of the fire is undetermined.

Baton Rouge Police Department, EMS and Animal Control were also called to the fire.
