BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - Southern University quarterback Austin Howard threw for two touchdowns and ran for another as the Jaguars beat Alabama State 28-21 at A.W. Mumford Stadium on Saturday.
Howard was 25 of 47 for 291 yards and two touchdowns. He had no interceptions. His two main targets were Reggie Travis and Willie Quinn. Travis caught nine passes for 153 yards and a touchdown. Quinn also caught nine passes for 100 yards and a touchdown.
The Jaguar defense gave up 297 yards on the ground, but only 113 through the air. Most of the ground work for Alabama State was done by its star running back Malcolm Cyrus. He finished with 185 yards on 21 carries and two touchdowns. His longest run in the game was 81 yards.
