BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - Have you ever met someone using a White Cane on the street and wondered how you should handle it? Wednesday was designated as White Cane Day.

LSVI observed this national holiday raising awareness for people with visual impairment. The idea is that many people can already find their way around, but if someone using a cane appears in distress it's perfectly okay to speak to them and offer help.

"If they look like they're disoriented and don't know where they're supposed to be going, it may be an area they're not familiar with, you can give directions," said Bobby Simpson, head of the Louisiana School for the Visually Impaired (LSVI). "Or you can approach them and ask if they need assistance. And let them go from there."
