POINTE COUPEE PARISH, LA (WAFB) - A recent audit of the Police Jury in Pointe Coupee Parish shows it may be in some trouble with the state and may have broken the law.
The report showed that the parish overspent. Under state law, the jury is required to change the budget if expenses are more, but the auditor says Pointe Coupee never did that.
Investigators also found that the parish's detention center was in the hole—nearly a million dollars last year.
"What we're going to be looking at over the next year is how the police jury responds to these auditors' findings so they can do a little bit better job on that budgeting issue and reduce the expenditures," said Joy Irwin, director of local government services for the Louisiana Legislature.
Officials say some of the changes will happen right away.
