State Police: Mother of Baton Rouge State Senator dies in crash

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - Shortly before 12:30 pm on Saturday, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop A began investigating a two vehicle injury crash that happened on US Hwy 61 north of LA Hwy 427 in Ascension Parish. The crash took the life of 80-year-old Nancy M. Claitor of Baton Rouge.

State police say Mrs. Claitor is the mother of Baton Rouge state Sen. Dan Claitor.

According to State Police, the crash happened as Nancy Claitor was driving southbound on US Hwy 61 in the right hand lane near the Ascension Parish/East Baton Rouge Parish line. At the same time, a Prairieville man was driving a pickup truck with a gooseneck trailer southbound on US Hwy 61 in the left hand lane.

As both vehicles continued southbound, Claitor switched from the right lane into the left lane in front of the pickup truck in an attempt to make a legal U-turn through a median crossing.

Upon entering the left lane, State Police investigators say Claitor slowed to a near stop in the lane of travel while waiting to enter the median crossing and was struck from behind by the pickup. The collision caused the Claitor's vehicle to enter into the median and the pickup came to rest in a ditch off the southbound shoulder.

Claitor was seriously injured and was taken to the hospital. Just before midnight on Oct. 22, Claitor died from her injuries sustained in the crash.

Driver impairment is not suspected on the part of either driver, and both were properly restrained. Claitor's husband and front seat passenger, 88 year old Robert Claitor (also of Baton Rouge) was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. The driver of the pickup suffered only minor injuries as a result of the crash. No charges have been filed, and this crash remains under investigation.
