LAFAYETTE, LA (WAFB) - Eleven people are facing felony racketeering charges for their alleged part in an international criminal enterprise. Seven of those were arrested Tuesday morning in a round-up by the Louisiana Attorney General's office.

The arrested are accused of stealing more than $1.4 million over the past four years from nearly 500 people.

Assistant Attorney General David Caldwell said the arrested would put out ads for used cars on websites such as eBay or Craigslist ranging between $10,000-$15,000. They would have a made up story to go along with their advertisement saying they needed to sell the car. Once a victim bit at the ad, the arrested suggested sealing the deal through the eBay Motors website.

"The problem is the page is fake. It's a replica of the eBay page, but it's made by the scammer. It even has its own security link so if you click on that link or call the number, you get somebody on the phone that will tell you, 'Well yes, this is legitimate.' The problem is you're talking to the criminals," said Caldwell.

Once the money is wired, all communication is cut off so the victim is out of thousands of dollars and without a car. That stolen money is then wired to Romania.

"There are towns in Romania that are fueled entirely by internet scams," said Caldwell.

As part of the AG's roundup, agents confiscated laptops the group used, flashdrives, bogus passports, boxes of fake ID's and everything needed to make fraudulent ID's.

The best advice people looking to buy cars can do is educate themselves. In this specific spam, the person looking to steal money sends an email that looks like an official email from eBay. When you click on it, everything is fake. The most important thing you can do is look up the car you are interested in on the actual eBay Motors website to see if it even comes up in their list of vehicles for sale. If not, that is a good indicator of a possible scam.
