HOUMA, LA (WAFB) - Authorities said suspicious activity by two men and a heads up trooper with Louisiana State Police led to the seizure of heroin, other drugs, cash and a gun on Tuesday.
Master Trooper Greg Marchand with LSP reported David Voclain Jr., 35, and Horace Scott Jr., 39, both of Houma, were arrested during a traffic stop. They both face drug and weapon charges. Bond was set at $200,000 for each man.
Marchand said after a state trooper pulled over a vehicle in the parking lot of the Southland Mall of LA 24 in Houma on Tuesday and was heading back to his unit, he reportedly saw a man standing on top of an SUV trying to pry open the sunroof. He added the trooper reported before he could make it to the vehicle to investigate, another man had helped the first one get the SUV and they drove off. Troopers said Scott was the first man trying to get in through the sunroof and Voclain was the other man.
According to reports, the trooper followed the 2004 Infiniti SUV and conducted a traffic stop because he thought the pair had stolen the vehicle. Officials said Voclain is the owner of the SUV and reportedly told the trooper that he had locked his keys inside, which is why they were trying to break into it.
Marchand said as the trooper continued to question them, he smelled what he believed to be marijuana and reportedly saw a handgun in plain view. The trooper contacted the Terrebonne Parish Sheriff's Office to have a law enforcement dog investigate further and the K-9 indicated there were narcotics inside the vehicle.
Troopers reported a search of the SUV turned up six plastic bags of heroin, a small amount of marijuana, a loaded Ruger 9mm and more than $3,200 in cash hidden under the center console. They added 10 packs of Suboxone, a controlled dangerous substance, was found in Voclain's pants.
Both men were booked into the Terrebonne Parish Criminal Justice Complex on the following charges:
Voclain also faces a charge of possession with intent to distribute Suboxone, while Scott faces an additional charge of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
Investigators added Voclain was arrested less than a month ago by the Lafourche Parish Sheriff's Office on drug and weapon charges and was out on bond awaiting trial.
The investigation is ongoing.
