Sheriff: Man shot in head over cell phone, 18-year-old suspect arrested

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

An 18-year-old Baton Rouge man was arrested Monday morning in connection to a murder that happened Sunday night in the 8000 block of Bayou Fountain Avenue.

According to deputies with the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's Office, Hancy Sanchez, 24, died Monday morning after being shot in the head. Deputies say the shooting happened over a cell phone.

According to reports, Sanchez was approached by two men while outside of his apartment complex. One man reportedly asked to use his cell phone. He gave the man his phone but tried to grab it back when the man asked for his password.

The man pulled out a gun and shot Sanchez in the head, according to reports.

Sanchez was taken to the hospital and later died.

Detectives were able to identify a suspect and arrested him Monday morning.

Deputies arrested 18-year-old James Mills and charged him with first degree murder, armed robbery and illegal use of a weapon. He was booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison where he is being held without bond.
