Police identify victim in fatal pedestrian crash

WALKER, LA (WAFB) - A Kentucky man was killed Friday night as he attempted to cross Florida, Boulevard near North Corbin Road (LA 449), at approximately 7:40 p.m., according to Captain John Sharp, Walker Police Department spokesman.

Harold Eggleston, 61, of Florence Kentucky, was driving a tractor-trailer eastbound on Florida Boulevard, when he stopped the truck in the center turning lane of Florida Boulevard at its intersection with North Corbin Road (LA Hwy 449).

"For unknown reasons, Mr. Eggleston stopped his truck in the center turning lane of Florida Boulevard. He then stepped down from the cab of the truck and asked two men working at a business on the corner of Florida Boulevard and North Corbin Road if he could ask them a question," Captain Sharp stated. "Mr. Eggleston then returned to the cab of his truck, retrieved a notepad, stepped down to the roadway, and as he started to walk across the westbound lane of Florida Boulevard toward the men, he was hit by a westbound pickup truck."

Eggleston was killed instantly upon impact, and was pronounced dead at the scene by the Livingston Parish Coroner's Office.

The driver of the pickup truck told police that as he approached the intersection, the truck driver unexpectedly stepped into the westbound lane of travel and that he was unable to avoid hitting the man.

"Based upon witness statements and physical evidence, it appears that the accident was unavoidable," reported Captain Sharp.

Blood samples from both Eggleston and the driver of the pickup truck were taken, but there is no indication of impairment.

Walker Police are continuing to investigate the accident. No charges are expected to be filed in connection with the accident.
