ST. GABRIEL, LA (WAFB) - A man serving time for attempted murder was shot Friday afternoon after trying to escape the Elayn Hunt Correctional Center, according to officials with the Louisiana Department of Public Safety and Corrections.
Officials say just after 1 p.m., 22-year-old Troy Watson was assigned to work a crew on the prison grounds. Two armed correctional officers, normally assigned to the line crews, were present.
Reports say Watson was ordered to stop several times and the officers fired warning shots, but the warnings were ignored. The officers then fired at Watson to keep him from escaping.
Watson was shot in the torso and was taken to the EHCC infirmary for medical treatment. He was then taken to the hospital.
Watson is currently serving a 34-year-old sentence for attempted second degree murder. He was not scheduled for release until 2043.
An internal review will be conducted and the St. Gabriel Police Department and Iberville Parish Sheriff's Office is assisting with the investigation.
