We've been railing on the Louisiana Legislature recently, so in fairness, I'd like to take a moment to congratulate lawmakers on one law they passed that really seems to be working.
In 2010, former Senator Nick Gautreaux helped create a new law that cleverly forces many deadbeat parents to pay their overdue child support. The law forces casinos to withhold child support payments from any of their customers who win more than $1,200 at the gambling tables. This new law is producing results. So far, more than $2 million has been collected at Louisiana casinos. That's wonderful news for families who are dealing with a deadbeat parent. Unfortunately, it's a drop in the bucket in terms of the overall scope of this problem. The total amount of unpaid child support owed to families in Louisiana now totals $1.4 billion.
