CLINTON, LA (WAFB) -

Authorities said four inmates, one of which is in the intensive care unit, were hospitalized Tuesday night after overdosing on synthetic marijuana that is believed to have been brought into the jail by a work release inmate.

The East Feliciana Parish Sheriff's Office said Shep Garner, 25, is suspected of getting a cigarette that contained synthetic marijuana into the jail. The four inmates hospitalized due to overdosing were identified as:

Peter Taylor - 36

Brandon Schilling - 28

Alton Williams - 37

Darrell Anderson - 42

According to officials, deputies at the East Feliciana Parish Prison saw an unconscious inmate in a single jail cell just after 8 p.m. They added that by the time emergency medical workers made it to the cell, three other inmates in nearby single occupancy cells started showing signs of drug overdose, with one of those going unconscious as well. All four were taken to the hospital. Two remain hospitalized.

Investigators said Garner will be charged with introduction of contraband and distribution of Schedule I.

The investigation is ongoing.
