Troopers report driver dies after getting ejected when car flew over driveway and hit tree

JACKSON, LA (WAFB) -

Louisiana State Police reported a driver was killed after getting thrown out of car that veered off the road, went airborne and hit a tree Tuesday night.

The victim was identified as James Kent Jr., 43, of Geismar. Troopers said the crash happened on US 61 north of LA 68 in East Feliciana Parish just before 10 p.m.

According to Tpr. Jared Sandifer with LSP, the preliminary investigation showed Kent was headed southbound on US 61 in a 2014 Honda Accord, when the car went off the road. He added the car then flew over a private driveway and slammed into a tree.

Sandifer reported Kent was not properly buckled up and was ejected from the car. Investigators said they don't yet know what caused the car to go off the road.

Authorities said they don't suspect Kent was impaired at the time of the crash, but per protocol for deadly crashes on Louisiana highways, a sample of his blood was sent to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis.

The investigation into the wreck is ongoing.
