Attorney says officer facing drug charge has been cleared

HAMMOND, LA (WAFB) -

The attorney for a Hammond police officer who was arrested on drug charges said her client has been cleared of any wrongdoing.

Officer Jennifer Payne Gauthier, 35, was arrested in April on a charge of possession of a control dangerous substance by fraud. She was accused of "doctor shopping" for prescription medications.

"Everything Jennifer did was by the book," the attorney said. "She was treated for a medical issue and followed doctor's orders by the book. No criminal wrongdoing whatsoever."

The attorney added the initial investigation by the police department and DEA was not thorough.

Gauthier was re-instated as a police officer in June.
