MAUREPAS, LA (WAFB) - Louisiana State Police said excessive speed is considered a factor in a crash that killed a motorcyclist Thursday evening.
The victim was identified as Irvin Lachney, 35, of Maurepas. Troopers reported the wreck happened on LA 22 east of LA 16, which is near Maurepas, around 6:45 p.m.
According to Tpr. Jared Sandifer with LSP, the initial investigation showed Lachney was riding a 2000 Yamaha motorcycle eastbound on LA 22 at a high rate of speed. He added Lachney apparently lost control after a curve and went into a ditch.
Sandifer said the motorcycle then hit a driveway embankment and went airborne, throwing Lachney off the bike in the process. Investigators said despite wearing a helmet, Lachney was seriously injured and taken to St. Elizabeth Hospital in Gonzales where he later died.
They don't suspect he was impaired, but per protocol in deadly highway crashes in Louisiana, a sample of his blood was sent to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis.
The investigation is ongoing.
