Sheriff: 4-year-old present during large-scale meth bust in Sorrento

SORRENTO, LA (WAFB) -

It was a team effort from the Ascension Parish Sheriff's Office Narcotics Division, the Livingston Parish Sheriff's Office and East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's Office Narcotics Division to put an accused methamphetamine dealer operating from Ascension Parish behind bars.

Undercover narcotics detectives made arrangements to purchase a large quantity of meth from 36-year-old Donald Sanford at his home on Pond Street in Sorrento, LA.

Detectives executed a search warrant at his home. Sanford, along with his wife Chelsea, and a four-year-old child, were all home. The child was released to the next of kin. 

According to reports, detectives found a large quantity of methamphetamine, four handguns, two bulletproof vests, a quantity of marijuana, methamphetamine pipes, several scales, and $92,961 in cash during the search.

Chief Tony Bacala with the Ascension Parish Sheriff's Office said that narcotics detectives also seized a 2005 Chevy Silverado Z71 truck, a 2009 Acura TSX, and a Yamaha 4-wheeler.

Donald Sanford was arrested and charged with distribution of methamphetamine, possession of marijuana, possession of methamphetamine, four counts illegal carrying of weapons, illegal use of CDS in presence of person under 17, possession of drug paraphernalia, two counts illegal possession of body armor, and four counts possession of firearms by convicted felon.

According to a news release from Ascension Parish, Donald Sanford has a lengthy criminal history dating back since 1996. He has been arrested 13 times on charges of robbery, battery, burglary, weapons charges, drugs, stalking, contributing to the delinquency of a juvenile, and failure to appear in court.

Chelsea Sanford, 22, was arrested and charged with principal to distribution of methamphetamine, possession of marijuana, possession of methamphetamine, four counts illegal carrying of weapons, illegal use of CDS in presence of person under 17, possession of drug paraphernalia, two counts illegal possession of body armor, and two counts possession of firearms by convicted felon. Chelsea Sanford has no prior criminal history.

Both were booked into the Ascension Parish Jail on September 22 where no bond has been set yet.
