3 Rubicon plant employees monitored after chemical release

A total of six employees were "showered" and three of them were taken to St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Gonzales, LA for monitoring after a "small release" of Nitro Benzene at Rubicon, LLC in Geismar, LA, according to plant officials.

The company manufactures polyurethanes in its plant. According to Rubicon's website, "Among the end products Rubicon's chemicals go into are refrigerator insulation, foam seat cushions, bowling balls, car bumpers, shoes, paints, tires, and pharmaceuticals."

The release of Nitro Benzene happened around 1:30 p.m. Wednesday and a shelter-in-place was initiated for the plant only. Officials with Rubicon say the leak is contained and everything is under control. There was no off site impact.

The cause of the release is under investigation. The shelter-in-place was lifted and the all clear was given at 2:05 p.m.
