BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - Firefighters were called out to fires at neighboring houses Tuesday morning and while they were there, neighbors told them of a third fire down the street.
The Baton Rouge Fire Department reported the fires happened on East Johnson Street near McKinley High.
Officials said firefighters were on the scene within two minutes of receiving the call, but a wood-frame house was burned down to the pillars by the time they arrived. They added the house was empty.
"They turned their attention to the neighboring homes where three people were inside," Curt Monte with BRFD said.
"I was in my room and ain't even know nothing was going on, but my neighbor come and got me," Luvenia Hawkins said.
The entire side of the house next door was damaged by the flames. Huge plumes of smoke were seen over Old South Baton Rouge due to the fires.
In fact, the incendiary smoke carried sparks three houses away and set the back porch on fire, but firefighters smothered it quickly.
